Dell As500 Monitor Driver For Macbook Pro
I use a U2412M at work with a MacBook Pro via a Mini-DP to DVI adapter. I do have a Mini-DP to DisplayPort cable that I will try and report back. As for the USB ports, they require a host cable that you have to hook up to your mac. I've spent time with a ZR24w at work as well, and subjectively I prefer the image of the LED backlight of the U2412M, I feel it's more similar to the built-in LED display of the MacBook Pro. I agree that the ZR24w is a more accurate display when brand new because of the expanded gamut of its S-IPS panel, but keep in mind that CCFL backlit displays like the ZR24w will inevitably dim over a couple of years. All in all, the U2412M has been working great and I don't have any complaints except it makes my older monitors look terrible in comparison.
Questions on Dell U2412M Hello all, I'm looking into a new external monitor and am liking most of what I've seen about the U2412M. I am hoping some you who own it might be able to answer some questions and provide input. I am looking for something in the 24 to 27 inch range. I much prefer the idea of 1920x1200 over 1920x1080. I'd like to purchase new technology rather than something a few years old from when 1920x1200 was more common than it is now. I haven't found anything at 27 inches that meets this requirement within my budget (tops around $300-400), and have found a few options at 24 inches, the U2412M looking the best. I plan to use this monitor mainly with a 2010 Macbook Pro, and I'd also like to be able to use it with an older Power Mac G4, running a Radeon 8500.
I presume this would not be a problem for the U2412M? I was hoping to hook up the MBP via DisplayPort and the G4 via DVI, but via this thread and some other places, I'm seeing some questions as to whether the U2412M plays nice with the Mac's Mini Displayport. I've also read that this display is not able to handle certain resolutions well, including 16x9 - what happens when you set it to say 1920x1080? Bars at the top and bottom? I would really appreciate answers to my questions as well as general feedback about how you have done with the U2412M on your Mac. I am also open to suggestions of alternatives. I've seen some HP monitors that would also fit the bill, but all seem to be either older technology or more expensive.
I haven't seen anything introduced at CES that would supplant the U2412 as far as my wants go - did I miss anything? Thanks for any and all input!
Dell U2412M It is a favourite monitor for photographers who cannot justify or afford the 'professional' grade monitors from the likes of EIZO and so on. I have never seen reported on the various photography forums I browse - problems with Macs. In fact quite the contrary. Purely from a photographers point of view there are many Monitors out there that are vastly superior to the offerings from Apple. However few of them are as 'easy on the eye' - I am the first to admit that the TB display is a thing of beauty. Whereas my own monitor: Asus PA246Q is not.
At less than half the price and with a much wider gamut. It beats the Apple display on every level. (for my purposes at least.). For brianrumsey: Dell U2412M arrived, but the Displayport to Displayport cable did not at this time, so I connected an HDMI cable from the MacMini 2011 port, and the other end (A DVI D cable) to the monitor. No cable adaptors needed since the cable purchased is a DVI-D/HDMI from Amazon. Hooked up a DVI/HDMI adaptor cable to the MacMini, and the other end, DVI to the monitor to see if this would not give me any problems, and happy to say, it to worked just fine.
Also hooked up the Dell sound bar, turned on the system, and all is working. The sound bar for this monitor, I chose the AY511, and the sound quality is much better than my older sound bar 501 that I used on the Dell 2407 FWP monitor. As soon as the Displayport/Displayport cable comes in, I'll hook that one up. Should arrive in a few days.
Screen is bright at default (Setting at 75). Just about right. No dead or stuck pixels at any color background.
Turned off the lights in my office, and cannot see any light bleed at this time. Confirmed: miniDP to DP works great with Macbook Air 2011 The U2412M is hands down the best monitor for the price for developers at the moment.
It works great with a Mac, and like someone said earlier, the display looks good with the laptop display. Tried the miniDP to DP and miniDP to dvi through an adapter and it works. Definitely get this monitor with your Mac if you are a developer wanting more screen real estate + better quality.
Dell As500 Monitor Specs
I would not recommend this if you are like a pure graphic designer or something though. The monitor is good but it's color range and sharpness (due to pixel count) won't be as good as like a Thunderbolt display or something. But for developers who do some photoshop, fireworks, etc, it's great. The question to me now is.
I just bought another one lol. But have to connect it to my macbook air through a USB to DVI adapter.
