Click to expand.I should have suspected the WD Turbo drivers since they date from 2013, but I thought for sure I had removed them. Apparently, that was the problem, but I'll keep watching. If anyone else encounters this, the WD Utilities don't seem to be a problem. But the Turbo drivers were, and to uninstall them, you need to run the install utility and choose 'remove.' Warning: after the restart, it still is a very slow boot up the first time. Subsequent reboots work normally.
I would recommend removing the Turbo drivers prior to running the Sierra installation. That hang on boot up is lengthy and leads you to believe the system is corrupt. So this is how I got it to work: 1. Download the last turbo drive installer(Yes that's the 2013 ones) 2.
Open it and remove the drivers. If they are not installed install them. Install the drivers and repeat point number 2 and 3 5. Restart the mac and press option (alt) at the chime 6.
When the boot HD is displayed, disconnect and reconnect your MyBook till it shows up. The system may restart automatically. Press again option at the chime and make sure the hard drive is showing correctly.
Choose Macintosh HD and boot up the system. The HD should show in finder. I tried the above and it didn't work. When I insert the external into my MBP, it shows up as 'EFI Boot', along with the Machintosh HD.
However, after boot, it doesn't show up in Finder. I can connect the drive to my MBA with El Capitan and see things fine. The drive tests all show no problems. Sadly, my TimeMachine backup is on the drive, so as of now, I'm trying to figure out how to get the backup off this drive and on to another so I can downgrade back to El Capitan until they work out more bugs with Sierra. So this is how I got it to work: 1. Download the last turbo drive installer(Yes that's the 2013 ones) 2. Open it and remove the drivers.

In my search I actually read a response that was sent to another guy.
All the tech did was reference that the original manual never claimed to support High Sierra. I too have a raid studio edition II. It is a great drive but the raid settings are no longer available. This drive did not like being hooked up sata through my Thunderbolt dock. I was getting random unmounting troubles. I went back to Firewire 800. That being said it is one of the greatest drives I ever owned.
It always works as I expect when connected to Firewire. Technology changes. This drive is old now.
