Also something to think about: With Lexmark you are going to pay out of your rear end for print cartridges. Not only are they expensive, they don't last very long either.

With Lexmark usually your black text is very sharp and clean, but color printing leaves something to be desired. HP has better ink prices for their black ink cartridges. Print quailty is average on both text and pictures.

Epson has average text and excellent photos. About text printing, but photos are excellent.

These are pretty broad, I know, but i've found them to be generally true. Love my HP 4215 all in one. HATE Epson; slow, weirdly hard to work. Gave my almost new HP regular deskjet to my parents as their Epson was too much trouble for them. Piece of junk.

Real piece of junk. Only had one because it came free with a PB I bought. It did weird things too, like taking ten minutes to print one page. Also, Lexmark ink somehow gunked up the high speed xerox copy machine at my local printshop, causing me numerous business embarassments as there were pages missing on things sent to my agent. I had an old HP 300 that I paid 650 dollars for new in the early nineties that STILL would work great if I could use it (I donated it). Seems to me that HP is way more Mac friendly than Canon, Epson or Lexmark.

Epson - The software was awful and always had to change the drivers on Windows. I wouldn't take an Epson if you gave it to me. Their cartridges and the print heads are separate so you only replace the ink tanks when you run out of ink. So, the printer then uses a ton of ink to clean the print heads. Also, if they sit for a period of time, they will clean their heads again. I have had HP and Epson products in the past. My old (mid 1990s) HP printer was great, but the printer/copier/fax I bought in 2001 is so frustrating to use. It beeps incessantly and the paper feeder is incapable of hadling more than 3 sheets at a time.

Text quality is average and picture quality poor. It is sloooooooow. Ink refills ran $29 for black and $35 or more for color. I decided not to get an HP My Epson was a photo printer and produce good color prints for the first 6 months.

The Epson ink refills are avg price but the cartridges do not contain a new print head like most brands. After a short while the old print head gets clogged and leads to poor performace. It has never performed as it did when new even thought I have cleaned it multiple times. From the research I did this is common on most Epson inkjet printers. For this reason I ruled out Epson. I settled on a Canon and love it.

It has good quality text and great photo printing. It is must faster than either the Epson and HP models I had. Zero problems hooking it to my iMac. The ink is by far the cheapest too. Don't rule out a Canon even if it is slightly more upfront; you'll come out ahead.

This goes without saying, but if you really want great text quality, get a laser printer and get your pictures printed online. You'll save even more.
